This date in history, November 8, 1889, Montana became the 41st state. Did you know? Roughly 3% of Yellowstone National Park lies within Montana’s boundaries (96% Wyoming, 1% Idaho).

Three of the park’s official entrances are in Montana: North Entrance at Gardiner, MT, Northeast Entrance near Cooke City, MT, and the West Entrance at West Yellowstone, MT. Yellowstone Forever’s headquarters is just across from the Roosevelt Arch in Gardiner, MT.

This #NationalBisonDay 🦬 we celebrate and honor the remarkable and resilient American bison. Having once roamed across North America by the tens of millions, commercial hunting and loss of land in the 1800s nearly drove bison to extinction. Yellowstone is the only place in the United States where they have lived continuously since prehistoric times. In the early 1900s, there were about two dozen animals left in Yellowstone.

Thankfully, today, the protection and recovery of bison in Yellowstone is one of the great triumphs of American conservation.

Working together with many dedicated partners including Tribal Nations, organizations, agencies, corporations, and more, Yellowstone Forever is proud to support ongoing conservation efforts through the Bison Conservation and Transfer Program. The goal of the program is to rehome Yellowstone-origin bison to Native American Tribes and support the ecological and cultural conservation of this iconic species. This program reconnects bison and Tribes and preserves the unique genetic makeup of Yellowstone bison by introducing them into other bison herds.

The Bison Conservation and Transfer Program has led to the largest transfer of Yellowstone bison among Native American Tribes in history. Still, substantial work remains to build capacity for the program to ensure more bison can be transferred to tribal lands and other conservation areas.
