A bison stands on a rocky, steaming landscape with cascading water. The book title Yellowstone Bison and authors Chris Geremia and Tom Murphy are visible, along with a banner for Yellowstone Forever.

Yellowstone Forever publishes new book about Yellowstone’s bison herd

The American bison, our national mammal, once roamed much of North America in numbers so vast the herds were measured in miles, not numbers. By the turn of the 20th century, they were nearly extinct.

Yellowstone Bison: Return of the Last Wild Herd traces the remarkable recovery of bison in Yellowstone National Park. Written by biologist Chris Geremia, the park’s bison manager, and featuring photography and insight from award-winning photographer Tom Murphy, this book explores how Yellowstone’s wild bison shape the ecosystem in ways no other animal does.

“Unlike any other animal, bison have stood at the center of North America’s history. They once roamed in the tens of millions, iconic and enduring, shaped by the landscapes they shaped in return,” says Chris Geremia and Tom Murphy in the opening essay of the book.

Through compelling images, rich history, and lived experience, it reveals the majesty, endurance and complexity that bison display, plus the evolution in human thinking needed to let wild bison be wild.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Yellowstone Bison: Return of the Last Wild Herd will directly support Yellowstone National Park’s Bison Conservation Transfer Program.
